Beginning: Tempo in the Cold
32 degrees, 7:30 a.m., Rock Springs asphalt oval
5 x 275m, 60 seconds, 3 minute recovery
And so it begins. Trying to train for both track/field and powerlifting. My plan, which I'll detail on the blog at some point soon, is to be ready for the outdoor season as well as for the state powerlifting meet. The powerlifting is on track already; the track/field not so much. So today begins the preparation.
My first task is to get my conditioning up. And since my nemesis is the 1000 (indoors) or 1500 (outdoors), I am going to do conditioning as tempo work for the weak point. Today, that means, finding a good tempo for five short-ish intervals at sub 6:00 minute pace for the 1500. Except for the first one, these were just fine; felt like about an 80% effort, maybe a little more. The first one gassed me, but my pace was off, too fast.
Considering the "cold" (I've lost all my northern acclimatization!), this was a solid first workout. I'll do a couple more of these, varying pace and number, before moving up. If it warms up a bit, I'll also get some sprints in.
